Vicenza is a city in northeastern Italy. It is in the Veneto region at the northern base of the Monte Berico, where it straddles the Bacchiglione River. Vicenza is approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) west of Venice and 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Milan. Vicenza is a thriving and cosmopolitan city, with a rich history and culture, and many museums, art galleries, piazzas, villas, churches and elegant Renaissance palazzi. With the Palladian Villas of the Veneto in the surrounding area, and his renowned Teatro Olimpico (Olympic Theater), the "city of Palladio" has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

I only spent few hours in this lovely city, my neighborhood where I live, in Las Vegas, Nevada is named "Bella Vicenza", so I was curious to see the place. It is a larger city than I expected, full of beautiful architecture and ancient buildings, but I believe this was just the old town area.

Unfortunately, the Teatro Olimpico ("Olympic Theatre") was closed when I arrived, this is a photo from the gate, but it should be very impressive inside, check out the Teatro Olimpico website if you can plan for it. The Teatro Olimpico is, along with the Teatro all'antica in Sabbioneta and the Teatro Farnese in Parma, one of only three Renaissance theatres remaining in existence. Both these theatres were based, in large measure, on the Teatro Olimpico. It is still used several times a year. Since 1994, the Teatro Olimpico, together with other Palladian buildings in and around Vicenza, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto.

A theatre in Vicenza, northern Italy, constructed in 1580-1585. The theatre was the final design by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and was not completed until after his death. The trompe-l'œil onstage scenery, designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, to give the appearance of long streets receding to a distant horizon, was installed in 1585 for the very first performance held in the theatre, and is the oldest surviving stage set still in existence. The full Roman-style scaenae frons back screen across the stage is made from wood and stucco imitating marble. It was the home of the Accademia Olimpica, which was founded there in 1555.

Church of San Gaetano Thiene  /  image by Yovav Gad  /  source TripLogs.org  /  license CC BY

It is a sanctuary that Vicenza wanted to raise to the greatest and most illustrious of his children. Saint Gaetano Thiene, the Saint of Providence, of a noble local family, renounced even at a very young age to a brilliant ecclesiastical career that would certainly have led him to the Cardinalate and then, probably, to the Papacy. In Rome he founded the Order of Regular Priests, Theatine Fathers, with the rule of living without fixed income but only of the Offers collected during the SS. Harvest.
